Gaya- Assorted Paranormal Stories from Ancient Indian City
Payal Sinha, author
In this short story book you can find paranormal stories- all centered in Gaya, an ancient Indian city. The stories have limited horror element to make it readable to younger audience too. Moreover, the stories are tinged with local flavors of this small town. While some stories are fiction, others have a true base and the author has taken some creative liberty to change the name and identities of the people involved.

Gaya - Assorted Paranormal Stories is a collection of eight tales part fictional and part inspired by myths and local folktales of Gaya - a place of worship in India.

Truly enjoyable and a bit spine chilling(I am using the term a bit because the author has written the book meant to be read and enjoyed by children, teens and adults alike), this compilation absolutely wooed me.

The book opens with a prologue giving us an idea of Gaya - the ancient pilgrimage city of India and the place where Budhha attained enlightment.
The ghost stories that follow are : ⭐ Waiting : the nerve chilling experience of a rikshaw puller and his encounter with an apparition.
⭐The Secret Desire : this one was absolutely witty and spooky at the same and I loved it.
⭐Headache : ooh this terrified me. Loosely based on superstitions, surrounding spirits and other wordly beings.
⭐The Bangle Seller : another tale that sketches the beauty of Gaya along with an encounter that stands better forgotten.
⭐The Genie who bought the Tilkut shop : I loved this fun tale. This story also gave us a backstory of one of Vishnu's avatar.
⭐The Secret of Muddoll house : Ah. Secrets and old houses. This was definitely one of my favorites.
⭐The Unknown Lady on the Terrace : Of angels and guiding spirits. We get a picture of suburban India in this one.
⭐The Well : Haha. This one was clearly funny and nail bitting.

I admired how the author manages to both keep the intrigue alive and make the stories fun at same time. What makes the story more engrossing is the element of India-ness in them.
The stories are not heavy on the reader and that makes them entertaining and a quick read. Gaya- assorted Paranormal stories made me reminisce the days of my childhood when my grandma use to narrate such classic ghost tales.
