How to Teach English Spelling
With over 30 years teaching English in K-12, college prep, and ESL both in North America and overseas, Professor John Fulford has a keen understanding of student’s problems with learning spelling. Beginning in a lonely one-room school in northern Canada before moving to major city schools, as well as teaching countless foreign students, Fulford realized that the usual way of memorizing a list of dissimilar words does not work. For nearly 20 years Fulford researched English spelling and especially the works of Noah Webster and in his 2012 "The Complete Guide to English Spelling Rules," Fulford laid out the rules that govern English spelling and showed that there is a great deal of logic to English spelling. The release of that book prompted English teachers to request a companion guide on how to teach the rules and apply them to a better way to teach English spelling. With the release of "How to Teach English Spelling, Fulford offers the missing part of spelling – WHY the words are spelled that way. He also shows the correct way to break long words into syllables so that students can study the ‘bits and pieces’ of words and thus learn HOW as well as WHY. The book is carefully designed with the teacher or parent in mind. The spelling rules are explained simply and clearly with examples and a valuable feature of the book is 151 carefully chosen word lists from which teachers or parents can choose words according to the abilities of their students.
