I Am John I Am Paul: A Story of Two Soldiers in Ancient Rome
Mark Tedesco, author

Adult; General Fiction (including literary and historical); (Market)

My current work is a historical fiction in nature and is entitled “I John – I Paul”. It is the true story of two Roman soldiers in the 4th century and of the cataclysmic times in which they lived. It is written in a narrative format in which John reflects on these events that landed him in prison. He describes the first time he met Paul, a fellow soldier, friend, and possibly more. The tale of courage, jealousy, betrayal and faith emerges, as the events of the time carry the two to different parts of the world. When Constantine becomes emperor the two are reunited in Rome. They are given a mission to rescue the Emperor’s daughter, who has been kidnapped by Constantine’s enemy. The reader accompanies John and Paul as they pull off a harrowing rescue and carry her back to Rome. In gratitude, Constantine gives the two men an early retirement and a house in Rome, across the street from his palace. This house still stands today. The tale continues as John and Paul encounter Christianity, not of the evangelical type prevalent today, but a purer form, in which love to the “Christus” and for one another are one and the same. Their lives are transformed, together with some struggle and disagreement. The latter part of the book recounts the change in Emperors as Julian rules against Christianity and the two men, once seen as heroes, are now accused of being traitors. They have to choose to stick to their belief or to bend to the decree. They decide to be the men they always were, and do not bend. On the night of their death they were surrounded by soldiers who were instructed to end the lives of the two. Having the opportunity to escape, and proceeding to do so, suddenly the one stops and stays the other. Paul then says to John “If we submit to this, we will be together forever in paradise”. These were their last words, as the submitted to the sword. The last part of the novel continues as the sister of John takes up the narrative, wondering why her brother would make such a choice, mourning his loss, and hoping that what he believed was true. It is a great adventure, and I know readers will devour it. It is an implicitly gay love story but geared to a wider audience.
