Heidi Patullo
Author
ImPerfukt...and Never Happier!

"ImPerfukt...and never happier!" is a gutsy and quirky memoir recounted through the lenses of humour and humility; brains and brawn; stupidity and sexuality; partnering and parenting. Gritty, off-beat, sexy, and cringe-worthy, her life mimics the reality of a true, roller-coaster life.

ImPerfukt is a celebration memoir of author, Heidi Patullo’s first 50 years, beginning with a hilarious imagining of her own conception and ending on her 50th birthday — a time less about the party than about celebrating her arrival at the dawn and door of a genuine and genuinely happy life. The genre of memoir suggests revelation, and hers reveals. It confesses and makes amends, too.

These candid tales of Patullo's life, as she moves from feigned perfection, through recovery from both it as well as codependency, are laid out in chapters, called “Acts”. Clearly, this reinforces the notion that the author was not acting of her own accord or with self-awareness much of her life.

But these “Acts” are not staid narratives. Luckily for the reader, this unknown writer's life is brought to life through delightfully descriptive paragraphs filled with sensory details — beyond sight and smell.  And, she surprises with lists, rants and asides. Patullo is a poet, too. Overall, it's a chatty, conversational experience for readers.

Each of the “Acts” closes however with calming pieces, referenced in the pages preceding with the initially unexplained letters “WPW”. One learns organically that they correspond to twenty “WonderPonderWander” segments. She uses the Roman numerals from I to XX for these reflective and poetic, even wise, writings. Clearly questioning herself, thoughtful readers too, find pause, perhaps even takeaways, from within her musings.  Each begins: "I have a new wonder that I pondered as I wandered and it is this: ...". Irrespective of their issuance from her own salient quandaries conundrums, we seem glad for their inclusions. Ditto for her various poems. She writes with a unique voice, addressing with keen insight and sound lyricism both parenting and partnering issues; in other words, she is a good poet. For some readers, the poetry may be the book’s best feature.

"ImPerfukt...and never happier!" journeys  through funny and poignant doings and undoings —  the bulk falling under the “intimate relationships” banner. The mess, the pretence and deceit, the fall-out, the concealed pain... it's all in there.  At its completion the author shows she has arrived, as desired, at the new/bettered version of her self. Truly, the author, knowing that her life became laughable where it once was laudable, offers a wish to her readers. In the Introduction of her memoir she states, “Use my life for your laugh”.  This memoir is evidence she knows the importance of laughing at ones fallibility; she overtly and generously encourages others to use her words as a healing source, especially when lacking the same from their own lives. She knows "she who laughs last, lasts." More astutely, she highlights nobody ultimately lasts, so choose to laugh while one can! Who can argue that?

A delightful memoir of a seemingly typical upper-middle-class woman who, nearing 50, finds the courage to break out of the mold she feels born into, despite the harsh repercussions that will follow. Heidi Patullo has a frank and casual way with words, which read as if she is chatting while sipping coffee across the table from you. A bonus is her witty poetry, on everything from child-rearing to life lessons, sprinkled throughout.

This book was an absolute joy to read. Heidi's courage and candor to 'tell it like it is' made for a refreshing and satisfying read. Heidi's gift to me, was to illuminate some dark moments in my own life and to find comfort that I wasn't alone. I loved the poetry about the day-to-day with kids; such a ring of truth. Heidi is a quirky and talented writer indeed.

I am so enjoying your book. I'm in Act Three: 1982-1992. I ask myself "What is it that makes me want to keep on reading?" One might think it is because I know the author. But no. Your book has a 'stickiness factor' (high praise in the marketing world, BTW). I can't stop reading it. Your turn of a phrase, your candour, sometimes your cryptic-ness, has me all-in. And of course, what woman of a certain age who has traveled through life inwardly railing against what is expected of her (by herself or others...) wouldn't relate to your journey to an authentic and happy life. I am so happy for you
