It Takes a Spy...: Secrets and Seduction Book 1
In 1851, Cecilia Paring has serious reservations about marrying her fiancé, Devin Montlake. Gone is the boy who could capture her heart with a word or a glance and in his place is a man who has made it clear that to be a proper barrister’s wife, the exciting and impulsive Cecilia must change as well. Although Devin Montlake loves his orderly life as a barrister, he’s determined to follow his roadmap to achieve his goal of becoming a judge. His biggest obstacle seems to be convincing his headstrong fiancée to fulfill her social obligations with a modicum of propriety. But when the jewelry collection belonging to Cecilia’s family is stolen the night before it is to be auctioned off and Devin is framed for the crime, he discovers that following his much-loved rules won’t solve this particular problem. He’ll need the inventiveness of his irrepressible fiancée to catch the thief.

Goodreads

This was a great “whodunit” mystery!

The story is set in the mid 1800’s, which I loved! Right off the bat we get to see the proper etiquette for young girls attending a ball. The two girls in this story are proper but also have a bit of a wild side that they keep secret from the adults. This gives the characters uniqueness and likability. I really fell in love with the sister’s boldness and tenacity especially knowing that ladies didn’t do that in the time they were living
in.

We also learn that one of the sisters, Cecilia, is having doubts about marrying her fiancé. But because of the time this was written in, she really has no choice but to go through with the wedding.

In order to pay for her dowry, the family decides to hold an auction of the family jewels. However, at the ball the night before, all the jewels are stolen and the thief appears to be Cecilia’s fiancé.

This is where the mystery starts. There were a few characters introduced during the ball that it could have been anyone. The story plays out so that the reader keeps changing their minds as to whom they think the real thief is. I was guessing right up until the end.

It Takes a Spy was a good mix of mystery and romance. I was pleased to find out that this was the first book in a series. This book wrapped up nicely so I will be interested to read the next book in this series.
