Children/Young Adult; Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror; (Publish)

Fourteen year-old Jonah Havensby has grown up completely alone on the Northern Pacific coast save for the only family he has ever known, his scientist father, who he admires and adores. When their remote home is attacked in the night and his father is killed, Jonah is forced to seek shelter in the nearby small town that he has had limited access to and knows even less about. As he struggles to find a safe haven with winter rapidly setting in, strange gifts that aid in his survival begin to show up at his hideaway with cryptic notes attached. But who could possibly know where he is? Why are they helping him? Who attacked his home and why? These questions drive Jonah on a journey to discover who his father was, and what actually happened that terrible night. With the help of his new best friend, the sharp-tongued, quick-witted Eric MacIntyre, and Emma Wong, the beautiful cheerleader who has captured his attention, Jonah will find out that he’s not like other boys. Just as Jonah come to grips with this new reality, he also must face the fact that the man he knew as his father was never the target; the government has been looking for him, and they'll stop at nothing to capture him.

Jonah Havensby, is a highly entertaining story that blends elements of science fiction and contemporary fantasy into a rousing and original shifter story. There's non-stop action and adventure, and I can honestly say I was excited and smiling while I was reading this book - it's that good. Jonah Havensby goes high up on my list of favorite books for this year, and I'm very much looking forward to the next book in this series.

The idea of a Martian being raised among us is a great idea. I know it is not a completely new twist on things but I feel that Bob Bannon does breathe fresh life into this genre. I love the way this story unfolds and how it is written. The narrative is compelling and you truly feel as if you are going along with Jonah as he finds out things about himself. Once you pick this one up it is not likely you are going to be able to put it back down again easily. I read it from cover to cover in very little time and I would highly recommend it as a read.

The author guides the story through to the discovery of Jonah's true identity, and it's here where Mr. Bannon's wide ranging imagination comes to the fore. Every good story needs more than a single character and there are plenty here, too. Jonah's closest friends, Emma and Eric M, are the other primary protagonists guaranteed to tickle most readers' fancy. Personally, I would like to have seen less narrative detail that, in some cases, was extremely long. I'd also prefer more conflict. Regardless of these, I would recommend Jonah Havensby to all fans of YA paranormal, science fiction.
