Liz Here Now
Todd Connor, author

Adult; General Fiction (including literary and historical); (Market)

Based on a true story in the 1960’s – Where Mad Men meets The Help, Liz Here Now tells the story of Elizabeth Baxter, the Black nanny hired by Dr. Frank Connor and his wife, Jane. Like Mad Men, the Connors represent everything the American Dream promised in 1960’s culture. They are wealthy, powerful and privileged. Their connections are influential. Their parties are lavish. Their public persona is impressive and striking. Unbeknownst publicly, however, Jane Connor is mentally ill and highly unstable. Like The Help, Liz is hired to take care of the young Connor children. Behind closed doors of the sprawling Connor home the American Dream has turned Nightmare as Jane Connor’s psychotic breaks get more violent. The children are the target. They are desperate for Liz’s love and protection. She emotionally assumes the role of adoptive mother and even calls them her “Little White Babies”. But Liz is poor, marginalized and Black at a time when that meant no voice, no power, and no hope of justice. Liz soon finds herself fighting money, power and bigotry to save the small children whose lives are in peril at the hands of their own mother. The screenplay is adapted from the book Liz Here Now, written by Todd Connor, the youngest child who titled the story with the only three words that ever meant safety for him and his siblings – Liz Here Now.
