Lucia's Renaissance
Heresy is fatal in late Renaissance Italy, so only a suicidal zealot would so much as whisper the name of Martin Luther. But after Luther’s ideas ignite a young girl’s faith, she must choose--abandon her beliefs or risk her life in the turbulent world of late sixteenth-century Italy. Twelve-year-old Lucia discovers a dog-eared book by Martin Luther in her father's desk drawer. At once, she remembers her priest's diatribe against Luther. Curiosity drives her to examine the arch-heretic's ideas for herself. Lucia's father, Giordano, worries about his daughter's impulsive streak and warns her to keep silent about Luther. Giordano knows all too well the consequences if the Inquisition should learn of Lucia’s find. Lucia confronts the plague, death, and the Inquisition in Lucia's Renaissance, the debut novel of historical fiction by author and historian C.L.R. Peterson.

Dr. Jeannine Olson, Professor of History, Rhode Island College

A gripping tale of a young girl of Renaissance Italy…

The story unwinds with impeccable historical accuracy, for our author is a practicing historian with a Ph.D. in history from Stanford University, and Lucia’s father is based on an individual who was tried for heresy before the Inquisition’s tribunal in Venice.

Readers of any age, from that of the teenage Lucia herself to decades older, find the tale gripping and cannot put the book down because of the suspense that builds throughout the novel. Peterson is an excellent writer who has worked very hard at making this book a superb example of historical fiction based on actual fact.
