The novel is set in 1788 Paris, France. A time when hope for social change was at its peak. Maurice Marceau's secret life as a gay man was carefully orchestrated due to his social prominence as a married man in political and financial circles although suspicions would arise every now and again in the gazettes. His wife, was rarely seen with him in public. Maurice decides to attend a social event with a long time female friend to suppress rumors only to find out the next morning that this woman becomes his mistress in the next morning's papers, suddenly diminishing the social rumors of his gay life. Maurice decides right then to pay members of Parliament quite handsomely to introduce divorce as a law decree. While Maurice waits for the next meeting of Parliament due the following year, a turn of events with his long time female friend makes him appreciate the personal freedom he always had with his current wife.
