"Moon Girl" is a lovely story that all children should read. It teaches children to fully appreciate the value of their gifts and the talents they possess. Each of us has a uniqueness, talent and value on earth. Moon girl soon realized that the "grass isn't always green" on the other side.
I also liked the message of help (service). While Moon Girl was away trying to find happiness on another planet, her sister, "Sun Girl" continued to keep the sun shining. When "Moon Girl" finally returned, her sister, welcomed her back, told her how much she was missed and how the night creatures could not function without her. I love how Sun Girl was portrayed in the story as an understanding sister. Although she grew tired and weary, she continued to do her part and let the sun shine for a very long time. Sun Girl was not angry with her sister when she returned.
What an awesome way to show love, patience and stewardship towards others as they journey to "find" themselves and what they want to become and/or do in life.
The illustrations are awesome! I love the rich colors and the expressions of the characters. Children will spend time studying these pictures as they read "Moon Girl.
It is my hope that parents will consider buying "Moon Girl" for children. I can also see counselors and teachers using this book in the educational system. In the wake of social emotional learning, this book is a good resource for teaching feelings, understanding and care for others.
"Moon Girl teaches children and adults alike that we all have a purpose and immeasurable value that we must cultivate and share... Beatrix's book will go a long way in teaching children self-esteem and to honor their gifts." - Raychelle Writes, May, 2012

The Spring term is a very exciting term with a very interesting curriculum to look forward to. Our topic this half term is Space. This topic will include aspects of history and science as we explore what we can see in space and learn about famous figures such as Neil Armstrong. We will also be having an exciting visit from the planetarium.
The topic will also guide our learning in literacy as we will be studying “Moon girl” by Beatrix Tambunan, which is a story about a little girl who makes the moon shine for the night creatures. As part of this topic we will be rewriting the story from the point of view of another character and using ICT to present our stories in different ways. Where possible our numeracy work will also be linked to our topic. We will be starting this term developing our knowledge and understanding of place value with a focus on using money. We will later move on to reading and understanding different units of measure.
