Nativity of a Devil
“Nativity of a Devil is a story of adventure, demons, time travel and the Seven Deadly Sins!” Each and every day that Virgil goes to school, he must endure the worst mockeries at the hands of his classmates. They call him a “Devil,” a “Little Satan,” and a variety of other names—all because of his strange appearance—all because the boy was born with two strange nubs coming out of his forehead. “I’m not a Devil!” Virgil shouts one morning, before lashing out on his classmates and erratically striking one of them over the head with a textbook. “I’m not!” he shouts again, as his classmate drops to the ground, passing out from the force of the blow. As one might suspect, Virgil’s attempt at revenge causes him to get suspended from school and, when he does, his beloved father gets so disappointed in him that he calls the boy a “Devil” in a bout of anger. “Perhaps I am a Devil, then! If my father thinks so, then I must be!” Virgil declares, before running away from home and hoping to eventually run away from London itself. “Hell’s probably a much better place than London anyway!” “Is it now?” a voice cries from the night. “Is Hell much better? Then to Hell we shall go!” Virgil turns around and notices that a demon is standing behind him—a demon named Botis. The demon quickly drags the boy down into the Underworld and shows him all the agonies and the horrors of Hell—delighting in them all. Botis then convinces Virgil that he is “predestined for Underworld,” and that he has no choice but to live out the rest of eternity as a demon. In order to convince the boy of his demonhood more forcefully, Botis brings Virgil back in time and, for each of the seven days of Virgil’s suspension, the demon brings him to see one of seven different historical periods—and in each of the seven historical periods, he shows the boy one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Botis shows the boy Pride during the French Revolution, Lust during the time of the Black Plague and Envy during the time of the Romans. The demon even brings Virgil to see the legendary Ship of Fools and the Biblical Beast of the Sea! In Nativity of a Devil, Hell opens up its gates and brings the reader down into a world of adventure, horror and humor! So let us now reach out to the hand of Botis and let him show us the Seven Deadly Sins throughout all of human history!
