Out of My Great Sorrows, by Allan Arpajian and Susan Arpajian Jolley, is a biography of the authors' aunt, Philadelphia artist Mary Zakarian, the child of survivors of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. The authors blend elements of biography, history, and memoir, examining many issues, including immigration, assimilation, gender, the place of the artist in modern society, and, most importantly, the effects of genocidal trauma on children of survivors. The analysis of Mary Zakarian's life and work is at once personal and universal, and speaks to issues of concern to all those who have struggled to overcome oppression, injustice, and posttraumatic stress.
