Please Excuse the Mess: A Memoir
In 2007, a near-fatal accident on a Colorado highway left the Porteniers' eight-year-old son with a severe traumatic brain injury that changed the course of their lives forever. It was the first in a series of tragedies and challenges they would face over the following six years, testing their familial bond and marriage. "Please Excuse the Mess: a Memoir" is an inspirational story of courage, forgiveness, strength and the power of love.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Excuses Needed

By Stephen L. Ghirardelli on October 27, 2015

Format: Paperback Verified Purchase

While reading Please Excuse My Mess by Heather Portenier, I remembered what a nurse told my wife when our own son was having medical issues: You'll be surprised how much you can take. Heather and her husband, Travis, discover just how much they can take as they learn to support and accept each other's lapses in energy and faith. Their lasting belief in the love that brought them together, even as it evolves and reshapes itself, is the heart and soul of this well written memoir.

5.0 out of 5 stars This story proves there is nothing stronger than a family's love!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this book but I am so glad I did. At its heart is a memoir of a life that is by the author's own description "messy", but it ends up being so much more. Heather Portenier writes with an honesty that is brave and that invites the reader to find hints of themselves within her experiences. Heather and her family face tragedy head-on with love, grace, faith, and a healthy dose of humor - all while remaining very much human and imperfect. The writing flows effortlessly, using an economy of words that only makes their impact all the more powerful. One sentence can leave you laughing while the next has you in tears. This book will leave you marveling at the strength of a family and hoping you would be as resilient in your own life - highly recommended.
