Pocketful of Poesies: Absolutely All Artful Alliterations
Pocketful of Poesies is unlike any publication you have ever previously perused and that is quite a phenomenal pursuance. Pocketful of Poesies is a pick of perfectly plangent dark tales. An astonishing array of very short stories that take alliteration to a completely new level with absolutely EVERY word beginning with the same letter. This mind blowing volume of amazing alliteration, such as “Annie and Adam’s Adventure at Arthur’s Animal Aid Association,” “Betty Bets Billy ‘Bout Blowing Bigger Bubbles Better,” and “Colin Couldn’t Comprehend Chafing Cream” WILL blow your mind. The alphabet may have 26 letters but there is no rule that each word you use has to start with a different one each time and Toula Mavridou-Messer proves just that in Volume One of Pocketful of Poesies.

Your eye is naturally drawn to the colourful artwork on the cover – courtesy of James Messer, and you can’t wait to take a peak inside… What awaits is a courageously clever collection of short sharp stories, each with an astounding array of alliterations. Quite how it is possible to start every word in every story with the same letter is stupefying!
I find myself wanting to re-read each story faster and faster like a trio of tantalizing tongue-twisters. Even writing this short review I find myself struggling to string more than a few words together with the same first letter, so huge respect to Toula for her achievement.. This book would appeal to big kids of all ages and anyone with a love of words. Magnificent masterstroke!

Unlike Toula Mavridou-Messer, the author, I have no words. Well, I have one word, WORDSMITH.
The Urban Dictionary has almost as many words as Ms M-M and they describe a wordsmith as 'One with the ability to effortlessly string together words, no matter their actual meaning, in an instance and in such a way it brings a smile to the faces of those listening, sometimes often laughter or tears of admiration for having heard someone with such an amazing skill.'
Ms M-M is a wordsmith beyond compare making this book brilliant for both older children for whom it can only nurture a love of words and their clever use whilst keeping them gloriously entertained and for adults who can only marvel at the size of her vocabulary whilst chuckling at her tales.

A tongue twister of a read. Great use of words. Betty and Billy blowing bubbles reminds me of my children when they were younger. Frightened Frank is me! The illustration are great too.. Well done you both got me to read something from beginning to end, which I haven't done for ages. Funny.. Sometimes laugh out loud, book for older children and adults..

What a wonderful book! Before I first read this, I didn't think that every story would be complete alliteration and that maybe the use of 'and' 'an' and 'of' would appear. Not at all! So clever! What a wonderful reminder how unique and vast our English language is. A brilliant gift for young and old who have a love and appreciation for the English language and kooky story telling.

I really enjoyed reading this book and I loved the alphabet theme. I did struggle a bit with some of the words but mummy helped me with it and I enjoyed letheing some new words. My favourite part in it was the bit about Billy and Betty - it made me laugh. They were brilliant illustrations and for some reason I really liked the name of the aunty at the beginning! What wondrous word weasling, with wisecracking wit!

Cheetham children cheerfully chuckled.

And after writing just two lines like that, I appreciate the skill with which this book was created even more! Well done TM-M, (and JM for the fabulous illustrations!). Heartily recommend Pocketful of Poesies for young and old alike.

This book was a very fun and hilarious read. Its an alphabetized rhythmic collection of descriptive words and phrases. Each letter has its own funny, quirky story. My favorite one was "Sara Should Stay Sober" because it is funny and clever and i love the illustration on that page. Another part that is very cool are the funny illustrations. As well as the Sara Should Stay Sober illustration i loved the Middle-aged Max Melts Mammoth Mohawk illustration. Overall i really enjoyed reading this book and i think it is for all ages. If you are young i think you will like this book a great deal, as well if you are a teenager such as me. Even adults will enjoy this book i believe as it is a very fun exciting and funny read.
