Raised on Ritalin is kind of like an episode of This American Life in comic format. At age 8 in 1985, I was among the first generation of kids diagnosed with ADD and prescribed Ritalin. I would go on to take it almost every day for 8 years until it seemed like I had ‘outgrown’ my ADD. I didn’t give it much thought until I began having trouble again as a young adult as I started a career and a family. My daughter is very much like I was as a child. What happens if she has the same problems at school I did? Would I give her medication like my parents had given me? Would it help her? Did it help me? Did Ritalin make me who I am? Raised on Ritalin uses my firsthand experience of growing up with ADD and being treated with Ritalin to look at the disorder and the world surrounding it from many angles (personal, historical, scientific), presented in an accessible and engaging format. This is a chance for readers to experience what it is like to be diagnosed and treated for ADD and all of the questions and issues that can raise.
