Remaking Democracy in America
Bear Kosik, author
Thirteen British colonies adopted a Declaration of Independence setting forth the principles behind their actions, their grievances, and the redress they sought. Thirteen independent states established a form of government of, by, and for the people. That government evolved to meet new challenges and provided infrastructure, regulations, and services as the need arose. But that evolutionary path forward largely stopped in 1981. A monumental shift in the control of the resources that drive the economy, correct political policies, and guard against oligarchy has occurred during the last three and a half decades. We have lost hope in the political system now in place. We now struggle with our finances, our ability to educate, our healthcare, and our desire to improve. Meanwhile the citizens of other countries, some more and some less democratic, do not struggle with these issues. There is hope. The people of this country must first recognize that the time for great change has arrived. We, as a nation, must stand united in our desire to address the problems we face. The foundations are present. We truly are created equal, endowed with certain rights, among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We can build communities and support our brothers and sisters regardless of appearance, religion, ability, condition, or characteristic. We can treat one another with respect and dignity. ‘Out of many, one’ was our motto. Embracing this principle reduces the risk of conflict. Yet many refuse to embrace it. Our government is intended to be limited by its people. Yet the people have relinquished this power. A government of, by, and for the people is as engaged and responsive as its citizens. By remaking democracy in America, we can enter a new age of growth and stability.
