Revivification of Wynter

A young man seeking solitude where he can spend time to contemplate when or if ever to remove his incapacitated wife from life support agrees to stay at his uncle’s cabin at a summer mountain resort now closed for the winter.  Although he is aware that a small group of residents remain in the village year round at the north end of the frozen lake, it was his understanding that the cabins sector along the east shore where all vacant.

On his first night, he is surprised to see dim candle light behind the closed curtain windows of a neighboring cabin and then a brief glimpse of a lone figure emerging and then quickly disappearing into the dark.  When he inquired in the village about the occupants of this cabin, he learns that, as the resort closed down for the winter, a doctor appeared and requested a large cabin to rent.  His only explanation is that he needed a cabin to house wards he cares for.  However, he did not elaborate on the ward’s disorder, and they remained unseen, secluded in the cabin sector.  Beyond that, the occupants were a mystery to all.

When the young man encounters one of the occupants by accident one dark night, a beautiful but strangely exotic young woman, he is instantly infatuated.  He soon seeks the doctor out in order to learn who she is in hopes of seeing her again.  To the young man’s good fortune, the doctor gives him singular access to his cabin and introduces him to his bizarre world of extraordinary people, one of which is the this same young woman.  Men, women, and children once diagnosis as terminally ill but who, through a process kept guarded for over fifty years have renewed life.  However, his wards must live a nocturnal life, forever shielded from the deadly rays of the sun.  Rising only at night and retiring before dawn, they are dependent on a recurrent transfusion of blood as their sole nourishment.

Can this be the means to restore his wife to health if offered to him, the young man ponders?
