SAM: The Cat Without a Tail

Sam: The Cat Without A Tail follows the trials of Sam, a young Manx cat with a soft, white puff of a tail. As he discovers that he is indeed different from everyone around him, he learns and helps to teach the importance and beauty of diversity and self-worth.

Sam: The Cat Without a Tail is a children’s picture book. Sam, the central character, is a Manx cat, and so, sports a soft puff of white fur instead of a tail. This is Sam’s story, his discovery that he is, indeed, different than most cats, his heartbreak over this discovery, and finally, how he resolves these feelings.More than ever, we need if not an understanding, then certainly a tolerance for diversity. Parents reading this story with their children can use this it as a springboard to talk about how people come in all shapes, sizes and colors, yet each is wonderful and “right” in their own way.

Sam: The Cat Without a Tail is a children’s picture book written by Gloria Lintermans and illustrated by Kristina Tasic. Alex was thrilled when his mom came home one day with a kitten for him. He fell in love with the little face that peeked out at him from the cardboard box that the kitten had come home in. Alex named his kitten Sam and showed him to his big brother, Richard. Richard laughed at Sam’s fuzzy little tail, which was more of a stub than what Richard considered a real tail. Sam knew that Alex liked him, even if Richard laughed and called him Stubby. But it was when Sam began to get to know the other cats in the neighborhood that he realized that his tail was different from theirs -- and that he was different as well. He began to hide in the house more and tried to avoid being seen by other cats. When he hid in the pantry, the door closed on him, and he was locked in the dark until Alex came looking for him. Sam got more and more unhappy and scared until Aunt Marsha came to visit. Then things suddenly turned out just fine. Lintermans includes an appendix on the Manx cat as well as Information for Parents and Caregivers on the development of self-worth in children.

Gloria Lintermans’s children’s picture book, Sam: The Cat Without a Tail, is a story that will resonate with any child who feels different from or not as good, fast or smart as his/her peers or siblings. As Sam finds, having things in common with others makes it a lot easier to become one of the group and to feel the self-worth needed to interact in a positive way with others. Lintermans’s little kitten is indeed special with skills of his own that save the day, as, indeed, each child is unique and special. The author’s message is so inspirational because it challenges kids to find out what makes them special, and it alerts parents, caregivers and teachers to watch for signs that indicate that a child is unhappy or feeling different. She also does a great job of introducing Manx cats to her audience, a special and rare breed most recognizable by their stubby or non-existent tails. Kristina Tasic’s illustrations are marvelous! They’re brightly colored and work perfectly with the storyline, especially her inspired cat drawings. Sam: The Cat Without a Tail is most highly recommended.

Sam: The Cat Without A Tail by Gloria Lintermans
My rating: 5 of 5 stars by Gina Burgess

Wonderful illustrations, quite colorful and attention keeping!
The story moves quickly and with the interactions among the cats, it lightly delves into the realm of self-esteem and how others can make one feel unwanted because of differences. The story also touches on how differences makes you unique and suited for different achievements.
Really good story for discussing these complicated issues with young ones. I can't wait to read it to my grandchildren.
I also like how Gloria subtly points out using our skills to do for others helps put self-esteem in the proper perspective.
I read the eBook version and it works very well as an eBook read.
The author gave me this book, and my voluntary review is above.

10) 5 Stars - What an adorable book to help children appreciate the unique diffe ...

What an adorable book to help children appreciate the unique differences they hold within themselves. Kids can sometimes feel down and low because other kids have pointed out what makes them different from everyone else. This beautiful book shows kids how they can embrace being different and how being different makes them special by not being like everyone else. Great book, and I'll definitely be recommending it to parents and teachers to share with children of many ages.

11)"Sam: The Cat Without a Tail, written by Gloria Lintermans and illustrated by Kristina Tosic, is a delightful story about difference and acceptance. The first thing that everyone, people and other cats, notice about Sam is that he has no tail. The other cats make fun of Sam and he feels lonely and left out because he can't do the things the others can do. When Sam overcomes his fear and achieves what the other cats couldn't, he learns to accept his difference as what makes him special and unique. The book includes suggestions for parents and caregivers on how to encourage the children to develop feelings of self-worth by appreciating difference and accepting diversity."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Self Esteem Book for Kids
August 13, 2018
Sam: The Cat Without a Tail by Gloria Lintermans is a helpful book for children when it comes to boosting self esteem. Sam is a Manx cat, and without a tail get teased mercilessly by other cats in the neighborhood. He regains his self worth when he discovers that even though he is a bit different, he is still wonderful. This is a valuable little book that extols the virtues of tolerance, and provides an awesome example of self acceptance and awareness for children. At the end of the book there is a section that builds on these notions with actionable steps to teach self worth for kids ranging from finding ways for children to experience success to avoiding stereotypes of what is appropriate play for boys or girls. Lovely illustrations round out this helpful book. Highly recommend.
