Secrets and Lies
Hannah Howe, author
Secrets and Lies - Suicide or Murder? Most of the people I encounter are hiding a secret and many of them are adept at telling lies. However, how do you learn the truth about someone who's no longer with us? Author, Barclay Quinton wrote Fabringjay, the story of a man leading a secret life during the Second World War, which was well received by the critics, but was ignored by readers, and Illicit Lust, a book he hated and wrote purely to satisfy his agent and publisher. Illicit Lust became a bestseller, a fact that annoyed Barclay. However, its success did open doors and he set about researching his next novel, the story of an ageing mobster. Barclay's research brought him into contact with many unsavoury types, including villains, shady private eyes and managers of strip clubs. The official report into Barclay's death stated that he committed suicide. However, a close friend insisted that Barclay was murdered and I was hired to investigate. Meanwhile, closer to home, I discovered a secret, and the truth, about my long-term partner. Was he the man of my dreams or was our relationship about to end? Secrets and Lies - a story of love, of deceit, of the many faces we all possess - the public face, the private face and the deeply personal.

If you've read the previous books in the series (I suggest you do. You won't regret it), you'll know Sam Smith has had a trouble life. A troubled childhood and disastrous marriage. But then she found love. It seems that trouble follows her, however. The novel begins with a foreboding. Sam ponders her relationship with her finance, Alan, that's no longer quite a romantic as it was initially. She can't dwell on it for long because soon she's deep into investigating another case--an author's suicide. Or was it murder? After all, he had recently been researching the criminal mind for his next book.

If you are an author or know one, you'll appreciate the sentiment in the book. Author Barclay Quinton writes a "beautiful story on every level," but because it's not hyped by the media, it's unsuccessful. Whereas, when you write the not-so-profound steamy book," it soars to the top. Like all true artists, the author considered it "cheap and demeaning, a slight on his art.”

A book about double agents. A finance possibly leading a double life. What's the truth? And what's a lie? The novel is filled with great descriptions, not only of the characters, but also of insights into the human psyche. What makes people tick? And, as always, the author sprinkles interesting bits of info about the history of the locale--Cardiff--throughout the book, giving it a home-town feel.
