Send Packs! by David Paul Kutchinski is an exciting foray into American history and those momentous facets that were scintillating episodes of bravery and courage during the tumultuous period of the American Civil War and its immediate aftermath. The Union forces fought the rebellious Confederates of the Southern States in one of the greatest civil wars the world has ever seen. The author writes a tale narrating many facets of the great war and battles that have never been reflected upon before. The tale begins with the excavation of the Little Big Horn battlefield in Utah -- approved by the National Park Service and the Crow nation -- in full swing. One of the historians picked up a souvenir and jumped with excitement - it was an historic icon - the badge of a Texas Ranger. How it reached the battlefield in Utah was something to conjecture. Kutchinski has meticulously delved deep into the history of the troubled times of the American Civil War to weave fact into fiction with a very high level of honesty and probability that any reader will be hard pressed to dispute.
Send Packs has been written in the highest traditions of fine literature, a book that is the mirror of the times. Lifestyle, speech, daily life, eating customs and habits across the mishmash of peoples and tribes who inhabited the land, as well as their political affinities and efforts to shape the land for an unknown future are deeply touched upon. Many protagonists are real like Generals Robert E. Lee, U.S. Grant, Philip Henry Sheridan and George Armstrong Custer (one of the most written about men of bravery ever produced in America). American Indians feature prominently in this history - Angry a Kiowa, Sitting Bull, Waking Stick and others belonging to the Cheyenne and Apache tribes. The story is supported by unforgettable fictional main protagonists like David Shane Cole, Darinda Shadeen Hawkins and many more who represent the unnamed real people without whom this period of American history cannot be written. There are multiple scenarios, numerous episodes of battles as well as stories of everyday life in those times. The formatting is excellent. The story builds up effectively to its devastating finale. Dialogue is frequent, the flow is fast paced and often overwhelming. The cover is bright and attractive, reminiscent of the times the tale is set in and warrants a look inside. A well-written 5-star thriller of historical action and adventure if ever there was one.
Well done!

Set in the 1800s, the story plunges readers into a world reeling with war and atrocities. David Cole’s father is killed in the Civil War and he is left with the task of guarding 1000 cattle. The setting itself is powerful and constitutes a strong basis for the conflict. The drought is getting tougher and the Mexican army, the Indians, and bandits are taking advantage of the war to get away with criminal acts. We encounter a young man who has to protect a herd of cattle from these men. The political setting is brilliantly developed and readers have a perfect picture of the influence of the Mexican government in West Texas. The characters are well developed and readers will enjoy the relationships that develop as the narrative progresses. Themes of war, family, love, violence, and adventure are expertly woven into the fabric of the story. The writing is atmospheric, evoking powerful images that will stay with readers. Send Packs! is a beautiful reminiscence of a period that altered history and sowed seeds of a culture that is still felt today. Beautifully imagined, well researched, and deftly written.
