Son of a Bitch
Immaturity, simmering anger, and years of therapy - budding criminal defense attorney, Benjamin Scales owes it all to his mother. She dragged him through hell while clawing her way to the top of the sexist, male-dominated legal profession, sacrificing everything to build a life for herself and her son, a bizarre and broken life, but a life. Under her ferocious veneer, Carter Scales is a shattered and lonely woman. They haven't spoken in years, but when she is caught "in flagrante delicto" with her star client, the leader of the notorious Salucci Crime Family, Carter turns to the one person she thinks should always have her back. But why should he help her?

A Great Read: Amazon.com

Thought it was going to be a legal thriller but turned out to be an extremely fascinating story of a mother and son who went through some very tough times. Fortunately there is always humor even in the most difficult relationships. As lawyers they both were following the same highway but from different reference points. Very well written and a very interesting read. Sort of a legal "Hillbilly Elegy". I recommend it.

An excellent romp of a literary debut. A fresh tale and wild approach to family and the practice of law that will leave you looking for more.

Preordered, downloaded yesterday, finished today! As an attorney (in Atlanta, married to a criminal defense attorney who went to Georgia State Law School), the authenticity of this book both in tone and content was refreshing. Although, you don't have to be any of those things to enjoy this well-written, entertaining and heartfelt story. The book is a great balance between action and exposition, flashback and progression, emotions and logic. Looking forward to more to come from this talented author!

Can't Wait For More: Amazon.com

This book far exceeded my expectations for a first book. If I didn't know who wrote it, I would have guessed Pat Conroy. Incredible character development and storytelling made this a fun read and I'm hoping for more by Jason and more about these characters.

Jason Sheffield has captured the essence of life as a parent practicing criminal defense and the boomerang effect of how our mistakes as parents come back around. As a criminal defense trial attorney for 40 years, I have seen firsthand how the law can impact clients and lawyers. The life issues we deal with in our practice often intrude upon our relationships with our spouses and children. Son of a Bitch is a finely tuned narration of how two criminal defense attorneys, mother and son, struggle to come together despite the intriguing and unique challenges in their lives. At times it's crushing and sad. Other times I wiped tears from hearty laughter. Its message about acceptance and forgiveness is timeless. With his first novel, Jason Sheffield wore his heart on his sleeve and shared many fundamental truths in life.

Fun and Exciting Read: Amazon.com

Fun and exciting read especially from someone who has been in the criminal defense field most of my adult life. Loved the story line and the artful way Jason Sheffield revealed the characters in his kind of locker room banter while providing a glimpse of the real world of lawyering and the sacrifices made to be successful. His ability to tell the story by providing flashbacks of the characters’ lives keeps the reader entranced to move onto the next page. At times, he had me laughing out loud. My only disappointment was that when I turned the last page, I was finished with this book. Look forward to more from this upcoming, talented author!

Great Read! Amazon.com

Fantastic read. Entertaining, great story telling, thought provoking and well written. You will undoubtedly find your eyes wide open at times wondering if the craziness is part of the 'based on' or part of the 'true story', which makes it that much more addicting. I woke my wife multiple times laughing out loud. Highly recommend!

This book is a winner! I enjoyed it from start to finish. The characters were great. I was hooked on Ben and his mother but all the supporting people were good too. The story was fast paced, the humor had me chuckling all through the book and I really enjoyed the back scene look at the lawyer profession. This was a pleasure to read and I hope there will be more to come.
