Stop Killing Us: My Story and the History of Racism in America
Terry Keys, author
USA Today Bestselling Author Terry Keys takes aim at the racial divide facing America today in this breathtaking memoir. Who needs to read this book? Everyone. There is education for everyone and chapters written specifically for different groups. Why? So that we can all engage, have healthy conversations and grow as nation. This book is not PRO Black or ANTI White - it is PRO UNITY. What makes this book different? The author has compiled everything this subject needs in one place. Common myths, history and real life experiences of regular, everyday black men here in America. Never before has there been a compilation of as many stories from a multitude of men. These men aren't criminals, thugs or gang members - but rather fathers, husbands, sons, uncles, brothers, business professionals and coaches. You'll be able to read their stories and relive their pain/humiliation with them. Through their powerful words and compelling narratives you'll be able to connect. Slavery ended in the United States in 1865 - the year is now 2020. America has had 155 years to make black people feel welcomed, wanted and safe. The gap has closed but we aren't there yet. Humans are inherently flawed so racism in America will never be completely stamped out. But the overwhelming majority of Americans don't condone racism. The recent murder of George Floyd set off a tidal wave a protests, riots, looting and social media posts from most Americans with a pulse. Most were outraged at the policing that was employed in the video that we all watched. But how did we get here? The author takes a deep dive into American history and weaves his own experiences as a black man living in America. Everyone views the world through their own lens. But in order to see everyone for who they truly are it is important to make an effort to see the world through someone else' lens. What are some of those experiences that black men in America go through? If they have encounters with police doesn't that mean they are criminals? How can white Americans engage? Where do we go from here? How can we knock down some of these walls and make America a better place for everyone? Terry Keys takes Netflix' 13th a step further. Don't miss this incredibly impactful, touching, inspirational and timely piece by Terry Keys.

Grady Harp

The authoritative volume on Racism

Texas author Terry Keys has published nine books - MAXIMUM GUILT, GAMES OF GUILT, CHAINED GUILT, an anthology THE MURDER FILES, DEATH TOTAL RISING, THE MISSING, LIE NO MORE, THE KILWADE TRAGEDY, and now STOP KILLING US. Terry is also a songwriter, and poet. He has experience working in law enforcement and corrections, and as a project manager in the oil and gas industry. He also writes for Examiner.com. He lives in Dickinson, Texas

Having read Terry Keys’ excellent novels, the resulting growing admiration for his skills as a writer merely opens a portal to appreciate, in awe, the power of STOP KILLING US. In a visceral, pungent yet openly sharing manner, Terry presents both his experiences and those of others who have endured the racism this country has tolerated - if not nurtured – since the era of slavery to the present.

He challenges us to become intellectually and emotionally involved in the desperately needed ‘change’ that the Black Lives Matter response to the murder of George Floyd initiated. ‘Slavery ended in the United States in 1865 - the year is now 2020. America has had 155 years to make black people feel welcomed, wanted and safe. The gap has closed but we aren't there yet. Humans are inherently flawed so racism in America will never be completely stamped out. But the overwhelming majority of Americans don't condone racism. The recent murder of George Floyd set off a tidal wave of protests, riots, looting and social media posts from most Americans with a pulse. Most were outraged at the policing that was employed in the video that we all watched.’

What Terry manages to accomplish in this definitive examination of the facts of racism that have been shuttered for far too long is to place us in the front seat of a series of stories, both of his own experiences and those of others, where our attention is focused on truth. ‘We need to drive out racism in the deepest, darkest corners of our country. Not being racist simply isn’t enough.’ He quotes Nathan Rutstein – ‘Prejudice is an emotional commitment to ignorance.’ That solid tone prevails throughout this book.

After an informative discussion of American history and politics that have perpetrated racism, Terry shines light on minority law enforcement and the judicial system, the disproportionate poverty and welfare levels between Black America and White America, access to higher education, capital, and politicians/influencers, and then shares the stories of such men as George Stinney, Emmett Till, George Floyd, Cariol Horner, Chris Dorner, Colin Kaepernick, and Muhammad Ali as well as his own terrifying experiences and those of people he interviewed for this book.

At book’s end Terry shares his plea for us to Listen, Learn and Inspire. ‘Change is NEVER easy, and it never comes without a cost.’ Words of wisdom from an important man who eloquently presents the truth and asks we all participate, converse, and CHANGE! Bravo to Terry Keys. His message is clear and so very important.
