Reviews
Austin Chronicle

Reisman’s name may already be familiar to many Austinites, as she was one of the originators (and one of the ongoing writers) of that big, bold, multimedia Intergalactic Nemesis spectaclethat Jason Neulander & company have only recently ceased visiting upon the planet’s more theatrical stages and arenas.

But that, of course, is only the tip of the writerly Reisman iceberg.

“I've written science fiction and fantasy since I began writing as a kid,” says the author. “It’s pretty literary, as these things go, which somehow allowed me to get an advanced degree and a couple Michener fellowships writing the stuff. When I worked on Intergalactic Nemesis they crowned me the Sci-Fi Queen. Substrate Phantoms is a novel I wrote over the course of a couple of years, then revised and rewrote over a good number more, as it moved slowly along the road to publication. It's a novel – and a world and characters – that I still love.”

As is usual at these literary events, Reisman will introduce the book and read a passage or two from its narrative, providing a glimpse into what SF maestro Michael Bishop has called “An out-and-out breakthrough, with mystical and sociological roots trailing back to Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End and Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness.

Kirkus Review

"A deep dive into prose-poetry sci-fi and a mind-stretching mystery."

Reisman (The Z Radiant, 2013) takes the familiar sci-fi premise of “first contact” into the realm of surrealist poetry with her tale’s argot-infused text, melding clever word inventions with esoteric phraseology. At times, one suspects that a fairly simple, if actually underdeveloped, plotline abides beneath all the filigree, fabulist grammar, and dreamlike imagery. But Reisman’s vision deftly invokes a remote culture and characters so extreme and exotically alluring that the concept of a wayward E.T. in this realm hardly makes a stir in the foliage. Newbies in Jedi pajamas be warned.

The Skiffy and Fanty Show

Mysterious doings on Termagenti station, and the story of a tortured survivor of an exploration gone wrong, both external and internal, are at the heart of Substrate Phantoms, a debut space opera novel from Jessica Reisman. Substrate Phantoms features a strong character-based focus for the novel, playing firmly in the more literary side of the genre as it explores a story of what only slowly and painstakingly is revealed to be one of a first contact with the Other. The novel primarily follows a pair of characters whose stories touch and eventually converge....

The novel is very well written; the author’s hand is deft and assured. Readers who are looking for a more literary experience in their SFF will find a lot to like.
