Like many people, middle age hit me hard. As a bookstore owner and amateur sleuth, I favored Agatha Christie and Dorothy Gilman novels over most others. I will not lie; I loved my bookstore. It represented years of hard work that carried sweat, tears, and happiness. The quirky customers kept things interesting. The biggest problem I faced for the first time in twenty years—boredom. It ate at me and I started looking at careers for my older self that could give me a sense of belonging like I had at the store. Old dreams filled my head and one wouldn’t let go. I was talking to a friend one evening when she told me about her brother. He’d just graduated from the Phoenix Police Academy at age 40. Becoming a police officer was the dream of a younger me. When I looked in the mirror now, I saw an overweight, middle-aged grandmother who owned a bookstore and craved something more. I was five years past 40. I’d never done anything exciting in my entire life. Would any police department hire a 45-year-old woman? After a little investigation on age and physical requirements, I began searching want ads. My body needed to change as well and after years of disinterest, I began running and added push-ups and sit-ups into the mix. My eating choices became salads and other healthy food. I trained and I dreamed until I had the courage to apply at small towns throughout Arizona. Then it happened. An agency hired me and sent me to the police academy. For eighteen and a half weeks, I persevered and finally came out on top with a shiny new badge, a certification for the State of Arizona, and the terrifying realization that I had made a mistake. Welcome to the Suzie Ivy Case Files.
