Thank You, Shadow
Terri Kelley, author
Death is a difficult thing for adults to handle and to discuss; it's even harder for young children to understand what death means. In this story, a little boy's beloved pet dog Shadow isn't at his side when he wakes up one morning. When he rushes around to find Shadow, the boy discovers his parents in the kitchen; they look sad and tired. The dad lovingly explains that Shadow became ill during the night and had to be taken to the veterinarian's office where he died. The boy is very upset and begins to mourn the loss of Shadow. This is a story of love and loss and love again. Parents and other adults who read it with their children will be opening up an opportunity to discuss the inevitable...losing loved ones. This is a compassionate story that is filled with wonderful illustrations that will help young readers understand the emotion taking place.

A Perfect Read for Children Who Have Lost a Pet!

We received this book to give an honest review.
So I didn't read the blurb for this book I just dove right into the story. And in a way I wish I did read the blurb so I knew what I was reading to K. But then again I am glad I didn't. Now you may ask why. K is a very sensitive kid there are some things that get to him and if it has anything to do with animals he is upset. With this story he was into it, but I could tell it bothered him a bit as he asked me what happened to Shadow. And of course I had to re-read the part where is says what happened and it brought back memories of us losing our dog Jazzmine. She was okay one day and sick the next and we took her to the vet so she wouldn't be in pain. It made us feel sad like the young boy within the story, and so it made it easier for us to relate! We get a small lesson from the boys mother as she gives good advice on how to overcome grief of losing someone close.
With Thank you, Shadow we get a young boy's version of what he is going through with the lost of his best friend Shadow.

This is a great story to read for those that have lost a pet and learn about the grief and mourning that one goes through. They can also learn that they are not the only ones that have to deal with something like that.

The only problem I have is that I wish the text and pictures would fill my ereader. It was kind of hard to read being as the text only fit into the box of the pictures. If that makes sense. The pictures were clear and were big enough to see.

I love this book, my family loves this book, and I think you will love it too. Losing a beloved pet is tough, particularly on young ones. This book is written with such love an care that it feels like a warm blanket around you when you read it (and almost certainly cry). The illustrations are so wonderful and full of character, I feel like Shadow was one of my dogs. You should just stop reading this now and click the buy button and start enjoying it.

I took one star off because the text is a bit difficult to read because of the size and typeface. If the text was a bit larger, or in a clearer font, it would be a full 5 stars.

his story is told through the eyes of a boy who has lost a treasured family member and friend - his dog, Shadow. The story lets the reader into the boy's mind and heart as he experiences waking to find his dog is gone, grieving Shadow's loss, comfort from his parents, and the value of treasured memories. It reads as though the boy, himself, is telling you his story - this makes it easy for children to relate to.
I feel as though children who have lost a pet could benefit from and relate to this story.
