The citizens of Leola live in fear on the border of dense, dark forest. Men disappear into the brush or are found dismembered as if by a wild and treacherous Beast. But fear of a different kind also breeds in the citizens of Leola. For Valerie Mason, the fear of going hungry drives her into the deadly forest. Valerie longs to see the world outside the boundaries of the town of her birth, but her father’s needs, and her own lack of courage, keep her at home, seeking adventure only in the dangerous forest. Young Audrey’s fear of being just another face in the long line of Lords to rule over the never-changing Leola drives him through the trees on the traditional Lord’s hunt. Young Audrey wants nothing more than to please his father, the beloved Lord Audrey, and fears that the townspeople will be more grieved to see his father abdicate the throne than to see him take over that lofty seat of power. Both Valerie and Young Audrey must breach the veil of trees again and again to confront their fears and fight their haunting demons. Will they emerge victorious, or will they fall victim to The Beast?
