Three hundred years ago the Council of Warlocks engaged in a secret war against witches they hoped would save this world from extinction. Sparing only younglings, witches were separated, cultivated and treated like, ‘humans’. When of age, they were secretly bought and sold as breeding stock to propagate the race, then discreetly destroyed before turning twenty-one; the age they achieved their full power. It is believed absorbing that much power causes insanity in women and subsequently; turns them evil. This became every warlock’s responsibility and for three centuries, they quietly carried it out... until now. With the voodoo culture of New Orleans as its backdrop, “The Bewitching of Camille“ tells a tragic story of a young witch who must battle tremendous odds to save her daughter from the young warlock who will be forced to destroy them both.

The Bewitching of Camille is a work of suspenseful and exciting supernatural fiction and was penned by author D. A. Barney. Set in the dark and fascinating voodoo culture of New Orleans, we enter a world of witches and warlocks where hundreds of years of tradition have resulted in some horrifying rituals. Witches are killed young to ensure that they do not reach their full potential, but they continue to be bred and cultivated so as not to kill off the race. The story tells of the young pregnant Camille, and her desperation to survive a young warlock who would kill both her and her daughter to uphold the old ways.

Richly occult, filled with gothic secrets and tragedies, The Bewitching of Camille is a stylish supernatural work with plenty of bite to it. Fans of horror and fantasy genre mash-ups are sure to love the atmospheric descriptions of author D. A. Barney, whose choice for settings, times and places gives an expansive history of torment and oppression as a powerful backdrop for Camille's story. The central heroine is a strong figure with plenty to admire, indeed too strong for the story's antagonists to allow her to live. What results is an intense work of character development as the mother and daughter bond, but also face the terrifying reality of the future to come. Overall, The Bewitching of Camille comes highly recommended for fans of witchcraft tales, gothic fiction and horror fables for its stylish and strong narrative presentation.

"I enjoyed reading, “The Bewitching of Camille (Book #1) by D. A. Barney, who in my opinion, is an extremely talented writer.  I also enjoyed reading the website for this book at Thewiccanreport.com since it gave the background of the characters which I enjoyed and found it very interesting and exciting to read about them and see their illustrations of their appearance in this very exciting story.

I enjoyed the way the author used varying (yet very appropriate) lengths to the chapters to magnify the intense action, romance, suspense, unexpected events, and more emotions which I felt all added to this intriguing story as it increased in intensity as I read on. (I happen to be a Dan Brown fan and Dan Brown also uses this same technique on chapter length.)

I enjoyed the writing style as well. Here is a brief excerpt,

“Camille’s eyes were barely open. She couldn’t move. Silently, she mouthed an incantation that distracted Lucien. It was a beautiful voice that came to him on the wind that only he could hear.

Rayna turned to Kaitlin and started to move her way.

“Katie? You okay sweetie?” Rayna asked.

“Don’t tell,” Danielle whispered to Kaitlin.

“Yes, Ms. Rayna,” Kaitlin said, holding Danielle tighter.

“Everything’s all right now. Is Dani okay?” Rayna asked as she moved closer.

Kaitlin feverishly rocked Danielle back and forth. Outside the room, Tirin limped up to Camille. He looked like someone who had just been on the losing end of a fight, but he was alive and since alphas only fight to the death, that was a good thing. He knelt down and pressed his hand on Camille's neck to stop the bleeding…

All in all, D.A. Barney has created and designed an intriguing plot filled with witchcraft, action, suspense, and more. The prologue was very intense and provided an excellent preview of the excitement to come. Very well done!
