The Canary Club (The Canary Club Novels)

Children/Young Adult; General Fiction (including literary and historical); (Market)

Seventeen-year-old 'Bad Luck' Benny is a boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Recently released from jail, he's determined to care for his ailing sister and the rest of his struggling family. He'll do anything to make ends meet―even if that means taking a position with a notorious crime boss. Quickly in over his head, he finds himself falling for the one dame on earth he should stay away from, but his determination to save the wayward canary just might get them killed. Masie, the daughter of a wealthy gangster, has the voice of an angel and gun smoke in her veins. Strong-willed but trapped in a life she never wanted, she dreams of flying free of the politics and manipulations of her dangerous father. Soon, she finds herself a pawn in her family's perilous game for control of the city. With a killer on her heels, she turns to the one person who just might be able to spring her from her gilded cage. But Masie is no angel, and her own dark secrets may come back to ruin them. Two worlds collide in Gatsby-era New York, in a time of dazzling speakeasies and vicious shoot-outs, of gritty gangsters and iridescent ingénues, where not everything that sparkles is gold.

The best flapper era book since The Great Gatsby. -Entrada Book Reviews

Ms. Ficklin does an amazing job of transporting one back to this era and fans will not be disappointed!  One can almost hear the big band striking up a swanky tune, smell the taboo libations of the speakeasy clubs, and see the glittering gowns of dames dressed to the nines.  She weaves in these details so seamlessly it is not cumbersome, making this an incredibly fun read! -InD'tale Magazine

In 1920s Manhattan, fair-haired, white mobster's daughter Masie Schultz is the embodiment of a flapper: she's reckless, fearless, and bold. Despite her brazen bravado, she's treated as little more than a commodity to either be traded or displayed as needed. When her father hires Benny, a kindhearted and loyal young man, to be her bodyguard, the chemistry is undeniable. However, as the danger around Masie and her family intensifies, will Benny be able to keep her safe and ultimately help her escape her dangerous life? Ficklin's offering paints a vivid picture of the Jazz Age, dropping details of glamorous flappers and raucous speak-easies, and it boasts cameos from Zelda Fitzgerald and Lucky Luciano. The role of women is explored, with a keen eye to their lack of choices; alongside these issues, there are also some rather intense scenes of physical abuse against women. Benny and Masie's romance is formulaic however, most romance aficionados should find the starry-eyed glances and lush historical details swoonworthy. -Kirkus Reviews

Minimac Reviews

If I had to pick only one book to read this fall it would be The Canary Club. There is no review that I can write that can share the pure joy I got from reading this beauty. Benny and Masie were so likeable and well written that I quickly forgot that I was reading a YA novel, and the mature content that this tale covers (rape, teen delinquency, abusive parents, sexual desire, etc.) really gives credit to interests and maturity levels of it's YA audience. Without question, I think that this is one of those rare titles that effortlessly defies categorization and can be easily enjoyed by adults and teen readers alike. -Minimac Reviews

RomCon Reviews

Canary Club pulls all the punches with witty writing, action at every turn, interesting characters, and intriguing dialogue that will make you tempted to keep reading from the first page onward. Overall, a satisfying conclusion to a well-rounded story.
