"I absolutely loved this book! J. D. Howard has masterfully woven a tale that makes the reader feel as though he is alongside young Sam Dixon throughout his adventures. We watch Sam's character evolve, as he faces his fears  when confronted with several challenging circumstances. Set in Italy, it is fun to sample the flavor and uniqueness of that country, while following the intrigue and plot twists of the unfolding mystery. The Vanishing Scroll is a thoroughly enjoyable read, and I look forward to more of J. D. Howard's White Feather Mysteries."

J. D. Howard has woven a page-turning mystery that is not only well-plotted, but also shows the fascinating streets of Torino, compassionate and eager protagonists, and a fast paced story. It is wonderful that mysteries for young people are coming into the fore again. The young readers will not only enjoy the good read, but may also be able to write a report for school based on their new attraction for Italy, Egyptian artifacts and hieroglyphics, or the ancient scrolls with only a little further research. Teachers can also use the book as a jumping off point for such units.

While this family-friendly book reminds me of the fun of a Hardy Boys mystery, J.D. Howard also weaves a spiritual thread into the narrative that doesn’t slow down the action. The Italian setting comes alive as the story unfolds. A great book for boys or anyone who enjoys a tightly-plotted, action packed mystery.
