The Chronicles of Michel du Jabot
The events of Michel’s life are varied and unusual. He is an envoy to Mars, where he gets caught up in local politics and in the process of trying to salvage a culture's lost sestinas saves the life of the local governor. He is rewarded with a job of his choosing in local government. He chooses to supervise the disc golf program for the recreation department. He fails miserably at his job, in part because of his newfound obsession with parkour. He is condemned by the governor to attend clown college, for he is thought to be no better than a court jester. This clown college is a euphemism for a mental institution, from which he escapes. He makes his way back to Earth, where he finds a tunnel system connected to the ancient catacombs, which leads him eventually to the center of the Earth, where he finds an enormous ocean in which the last whales dwell. In the ocean is an island inhabited by the Tang Dynasty “Eight Immortals of the Wine Cup,” who entertain Michel and his traveling companions until he begins to realize that his days are numbered. His last desire is to return to his family’s burial plot in the catacombs underneath the Gardens of Obsane Topiary, which are supervised by a group of plaster casters who make his death mask for him. Inside the mask is an asemic message he has been searching for, which gives him some sense of being.
