The Eagle and the Child: The Child (Volume 1)
S. Khubiar, author

Working for the Mossad was never as dangerous as retiring from it. Shahla is an Israeli asset concealed in her American job, and an injury leads to a new life with a man who restores her body and soul. The forbidden union challenges the couple when Shahla's Persian Jewish culture clashes with his. The marriage is further complicated when she refuses to discuss her past, and an unseen figure for whom she has affection overshadows their marriage. The family Passover answers many questions about this clandestine visitor, but the celebration turns deadly. Shahla is drawn into a war not her own, and the massacre leads to an unimaginable chain of events. When the Mossad and her trade craft fail, only faith remains. The Child is the first book of the Eagle and Child trilogy.

Reviews
The intriguing first volume of Khubiar’s espionage trilogy opens with Phillip Sherrod, a doctor working in a rural Appalachian county, treating attractive 37-year-old Shahla Markow for a shoulder injury she may have incurred while teaching self-defense to the staff of the federal prison where she works. Shahla’s reticence convinces Philip that her job at the prison is a cover. Their paths cross again in the ER after she’s attacked by an armed inmate, whom she kills in self-defense. Phillip, a Christian, and Shahla, an observant Jew, begin dating, despite their religious differences, and they eventually get married. Shahla is forced to reveal more of her past after their home is visited by two Israelis. She admits that she once worked for the Israeli intelligence services, and explains that an Israeli drug cartel head, whom she helped arrest 10 years earlier, has been released from prison, placing her life and Phillip’s in danger. Bloodshed follows, but Khubiar’s care in investing in the inner lives of her leads makes this more than just another action yarn. (BookLife)

Smart, fast paced and soundly executed, The Eagle and the Child: The Child, sees Khubiar taking a rivetingly plausible central theme, and delivering a power packed romantic thriller. With far too many novels in the genre centring on clichéd protagonists it’s refreshing to see an author break the mould with an intelligent lead who has genuine depth, and Shahla certainly fits the bill with faith and her Mossad training proving equally powerful drivers in her life. From the opening chapter with Phillip Sherrod, her persona always feels authentic whilst Khubiar gets the pitch and momentum of Shahla's narrative just right. On this level, it certainly makes for pure entertainment but dig a little deeper and it’s also a poignant reflection of the times we live in, evoking a strong sense of place, moral choices, immoral certainties, human nature and the power of faith to pull us through the darkest of times. It’s on this level that Khubiar ultimately ensnares our attention and leaves us with something to think about beyond what proves to be a cracking ending.

A high octane start to an exciting new series, The Eagle and the Child: The Child, is strongly recommended.

In this excellent tale of a reluctant Israeli assassin put back into harness, S. Khubiar makes cultural and religious differences contained in the marriage of a practicing Jew and a wealthy Protestant as perilous as machine-gun sprays and choke-holds.  Khubiar fulfills the demands of the thriller genre in getting readers to turn the page, while at the same time educating them in the mysteries of Judaism.  This is quite a feat, it and Khubiar’s success in carrying it off shows that he is capable of writing about themes not quite so violent.

Reader's Favorite Reviewer Arya Fomonyuy: "5 stars...features stellar writing, a gripping story, and memorable characters. This is a great read, a story that explores mixed cultures and I enjoyed the way the author talks about the complexities of a marriage between a Jewish and a Gentile. S. Khubiar has a unique gift for the storytelling craft, witty and intelligent dialogues, and character development. I started enjoying the beauty of the language and the depth of the dialogues from the very first page. There are expressions that are just so insightful and lovely. The conflict is multilayered and beautifully developed to move the story forward. The characters have depth and readers will enjoy Phillip and Shahla, the tension between them, and the incredible journey they take through the entire story. The Eagle and the Child features stellar writing, a gripping story, and memorable characters. It opens a whole new world for readers to navigate. A delightful read, indeed!" Readers' Favorite 5 stars: "Espionage at its best."The Eagle and the Child by S. Khubiar is a stunning opening in The Child trilogy, featuring espionage at its best, a story that combines elements of a hard-core political thriller with intense action to take readers on a rollercoaster ride. Emotionally strong and psychologically intense, this novel is a work of great entertainment. This well-crafted thriller had me hooked from the very beginning and the author does an impeccable job with character and plot. There is no way the reader can't root for the characters. The position of the protagonist is very delicate and the reader can't help but feel for her. There is a great sense of pacing and the plot is filled with intricacies that draw readers into its occasional darkness and then throw them back to the crude reality of what it is like to be a spy. S. Khubiar's writing is measured and very accessible to readers. The Eagle and the Child is a gripping story that grabs the reader instantly by the throat and only gives some respite at its satisfying conclusion. Reviewed by Christian Sia for Reader's Favorite.5 stars.  Reviewed By Susan Sewell for Readers' FavoriteEspionage, religion, and love collide in the thrilling novel, The Eagle and the Child. The Eagle and the Child by S. Khubiar is a scintillating tale about a woman operative's struggles to have an ordinary life, despite her race, religion, and career. In combining Shahla's and Phillip's dissimilar cultures, the story realistically portrays the extreme difficulties existing in combining two diverse backgrounds. Shahla views her place in her home and society in the traditions of her Persian parents, which vary significantly in contrast to Phillip's Protestant upbringing. The polarity of their formative years brings an element of intensity to the plot and an unexpected development in the storyline. This is an enlightening story confronting the issues of hate and prejudice from the viewpoint of those who are the victims of intolerance.  Intrigue and subterfuge are the principal elements woven throughout the book, laced with fast-paced action and electrifying fight scenes. These exciting aspects keep the reader mesmerized and entertained until the final page. It is a suspenseful story centered around international government conflicts and building to an exhilarating climax. This riveting novel terminates on an emotional cliffhanger, leaving the reader anxiously awaiting the sequel. This is a brilliant beginning to a saga that reminds me of a modern version of the "Zion Chronicles" by Brock and Bodie Thoene. Discretion is advised as there are bouts of violence, mild sex scenes, and a few mature words.
