THE EYE OF THE FALCON: The al-Andalus series Bk 2 - a boy becomes ruler of Moorish Spain
Joan Fallon, author
The Eye of the Falcon is the second novel in a series about Muslim Spain, set in the Andalusian city of Córdoba. It is the story of Subh, who was captured, sold into slavery and yet becomes the favourite wife of the Caliph of al-Andalus by giving him an heir. The novel opens with the death of the caliph and the succession of his son, al-Hisham, an eleven-year-old boy. Immediately his mother and her lover set about taking over control and set up a Regency to rule until the new caliph is old enough. As the years pass, the boy becomes more and more isolated, cut off from his government and from the Royal Court. He is imprisoned in his beautiful palace while the Regents gradually move all the government departments to Córdoba. His only friend is a young falconer who teaches him the skills of falconry, and a peregrine falcon who becomes his constant companion. As al-Hisham is gradually forgotten, his Regent, al-Mansur, becomes increasingly powerful and the caliph begins to live in fear of his life. His mother gradually realises that her lover has no intention of allowing her son to take his rightful position as Supreme Ruler and turns her attention to ensuring her son’s safety. Subh’s journey from destitution to riches is rich with the historical details of an exotic way of life, long disappeared.
Reviews
Darius Stransky ( The King’s Jew Quartet)

Once again Joan's new book "The Eye of the Falcon" like all her other books has been an excellent read. It is the kind of book that draws the reader in from page one leading from one exciting episode to another encouraging one to read on and on. The historical aspect was excellent and the author must have done her research to get the details so accurate while adding some imagination to make such an interesting story. A book well worth reading.

I was fortunate enough to read the first book in this series (The Shining City) and really enjoyed it. This second novel is as good as the first and immerses the reader in the gritty world of court intrigue wonderfully. One can almost feel the sand whipping across your face as you read. I received a review copy of this work and my views are based on what a reader gets from this book. I can honestly recommend this novel to the house. Buy it. Live it. Enjoy it.
