The Injection
DL Jones, author
The only thing to save two old friends from death may also be what kills them. Mr. Peters is a successful business owner. Other than dealing with a recent rash of break-ins, he lives a very satisfying life. That was until a childhood friend and brilliant scientist paid him a visit. While the two friends had a troubled past, not speaking for ten years, the reunion was a happy one. That happiness quickly took a wrong turn as their lives are threatened. Now held captive, the use of an experimental drug was the only option. A top-secret drug that enhanced a person’s will and physicality is the only thing giving them a fighting chance. However, there are deadly side effects. Along with enhanced abilities comes a decrease in mental stability. Moreover, there is more to the kidnappings than first thought. Will the two childhood friends maintain their sanity long enough to survive?

What a fun read for a medical action “thriller”! The Injection by DL Jones and Devante Cresh was anything but what I expected. In fact, it was refreshingly different. Rather than bogging readers down in medical details and jargon, as so many medically-based novels do, The Injection gets straight into the action centered around the final stages of developing a rather frightening and powerful drug...one that turns ordinary mice into super-mice. Now all one needs is to see what it will do to/for a human being.

The guinea pig who didn’t volunteer to be a test subject but suddenly finds himself in that role is Mr. Peters. He is a successful business owner who pops viagra in the hope he can finally give his wife the baby they both want. After Mr. Peters, courtesy of a childhood friend now turned scientist, experiences how it feels to become a temporary superman, he finds himself indulging more and more frequently...typical addiction...and the result of his new superhuman strength is disastrous. You’ve got to read The Injection to truly envision Mr. Peters jumping from six-story rooftops, crashing through solid doors, being shot multiple times but never dying, and suddenly, exhausted from his Superman escapades, falling asleep for days at a time. And strangely enough, it’s almost believable!

The strongest part of The Injection, for me, apart from the initial plot concept and the excellent use of dialogue, is the cinematic presentation of scenes like those described above. You can just envision all of this action on a large movie screen. Sure, it’s pure fantasy occasionally bordering on horror, but just the kind of read that’s perfect when you need to escape the real world. And don’t we all need a bit of that nowadays!
