I was initially hesitant reading this book when I saw the words uncover your loving self through the "Art of Being Selfish." We're taught that nothing good can come from being selfish, right? However, I discovered that in order to sustain and enjoy a healthy relationship, one must focus on addressing your own issues & making yourself happy instead of depending on someone else to do that for you. Some people think they can skip this part & simply move from one relationship to the next hoping this new person will solve all of their problems. This book teaches you the importance of addressing your own issues FIRST, otherwise they can eventually resurface in your new relationships further perpetuating the toxic cycle.
Involving God in your life's decisions and taking care of self first is KEY to happiness and success in any relationship and that's what I discovered from reading the Joy of Me. I also found Dr. Pham's chapters on Forgiveness and Being Real very insightful. A must read ~

I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs some self-reflection and who tends to put others before themselves. I do not consider myself an avid reader, but have to admit this book caught my attention and took me by surprise. It is a quick and easy read as each chapter flows into the next very well. I was forced to reflect on myself and put life into perspective, which is something people shy away from for various selfless reasons. This book allows you to escape from the stresses of everyday life and put what matters most as the forefront. Individuals feel compelled to please everyone else and lose touch with their own ambitions. The concept of making yourself happy before you are capable of making others happy is an underlying theme throughout the book and should be applied in our daily lives. Take some time for yourself and read this book!

Dr. Shaelyn Pham turns the notion of selfishness on its head and shows us how the culturally ingrained belief that "being selfish is bad" is in fact unhealthy to the individual. With this counterintuitive and refreshing premise, Dr. Pham launches into a simple, inspiring, and compassionate book that argues that we have to learn to love ourselves first before we can properly love others. It's a simple key that we don't usually think about, and Dr. Pham clearly illustrates how being selfish for oneself can turn our broken, empty lives around. A quick, eye-opening read!

This book is Amazing! I really enjoyed it. It was a light read but a thorough look at oneself and how to bring about the joy and happiness you've always wanted by loving yourself unconditionally. The book take a slightly unique and fresh approach at bringing together what is normally considered a prohibited social custom of "being selfish" and shows that this act is from the author's perspective the best method to obtain true happiness not just for yourself, but for everyone that you encounter. The book share's an integrated look at how enjoying ourselves and being fulfilled in our lives can help us to help others fulfill their needs and bring them joy. The book demonstrates by clearly embracing the joyfulness in oneself we will be able to get out of our own way when trying to bring others that same delightful success by giving them our full and undivided attention to appreciate and tend to others. The book reminds us that when you focus on the light, the light will out shine the darkness and when you focus on the good in yourself and the positive actions that bring you happiness and joy, this joy will out shine your flaws and bring about change in your life and the lives of your surrounding friends. I highly recommend this book!
