The Magic Carpet

Adult; General Fiction (including literary and historical); (Market)

Children at a London school are given homework - retell a traditional tale with your family for performance at a storytelling festival. Some families love the challenge; others are confused or uninterested. Over six weeks in autumn 2016 we hear the life stories of three generations in five diverse households, as national and individual events impact on their progress with the original task. The novel explores how the magic of storytelling can protect individuals from despair and bind the community together for a happy ending.

I loved this book, the work of an author who is finding her full stride, confident in her ability to spin a rich yarn of interlocking voices, themes and moral enquiry. It’s an ambitious state-of-the-nation fable of five neighbouring multi-ethnic Outer London families who are represented variously by children and parents, with each narrator having a well-rounded and unique personality. The Magic Carpet deserves to reach a wide audience.
