The Memory of Loss
Reeling from a devastating loss she believes she has caused, nineteen-year-old Nadine Hall has lived an illusion rather than face an unbearable reality. When she’s given the chance to make a fresh start, she lands a job as a carer for an archaeologist in Mougins, near Cannes, the perfect location for the movie buff that she is. She settles happily with her charge, Lilly Somerville, Lilly’s sister Viv who suffers from dementia, and Agnes, the housekeeper. But Nadine’s blissful existence is shattered with the arrival of Lilly’s only daughter, Katrina, who wants Nadine gone. The fear of being sent back home threatens to drive the troubled Nadine to the brink, until she happens upon Lilly’s account of her life in German-occupied Paris, which she believes is the key to outsmarting Katrina. Her scheme backfires, with grave consequences.
Reviews
Mary Ann Sementelli

I found the author's literary skill both in character development and use of beautiful images and use of exquisite metaphors gave a richness to this story that will linger with me for a long time. So many of the situations, relationships, emotions, and conflicts have universal application to so many of our lives. The tragic ending is a sad truth of how sometimes depression cannot be licked, meds or not, but I didn't think Nadine was that far gone.
