Set at the end of the 18th century when Britain was at war with France, the story follows the coming of age of a young naval officer as he discovers mysterious goings-on back in his home village in darkest Essex. Beautifully written and well-paced, the reader is drawn into the pagan world of superstition, witchcraft and ancient fertility rites played out under a full moon.
