A superhuman warrior from another dimension. An FBI agent with a troubled past. A search for a killer that uncovers a depraved cult. When Special Agent Zan O’Gara investigates a ritual murder, she meets the only man who’s ever been able to reach beyond her emotional defenses. Little does she know he harbors a dangerous secret. Barakiel accepted his solitary life after the rulers of his homeworld banished him to Earth, but his encounter with the fascinating Zan O'Gara changes everything. He knows he should stay away from her before his enemies make her a target. No matter. There's no taming the unruly passion of a Covalent warrior. As Zan’s investigation brings her closer to the truth about her lover, Barakiel realizes his presence on Earth has placed its most vulnerable citizens in danger. Compelled to protect them, he undertakes a series of duties he may not survive, even as Zan rescues him from a deadened heart.
This book was freaking fantastic, bar none. I'm not a religious person, but I did appreciate how the author wove historical elements from Christianity (and maybe Judaism - again, I'm not religious, so I'm guessing) into this tale. It was sprawling - covering eons of time and multiple realms - and so beautifully written.
Barakiel is an immediately sympathetic character - he can't help that his father is Lucifer, but he's banished to the Earthly realm because the rest of the Covalent warriors can't trust him. Zan is also a sympathetic character - a woman in law enforcement, tasked with investigating an unusual murder, who's also a recovering alcoholic. 2 strong, flawed heroes with deeply buried passions - when they come together, it's nearly explosive.
The action is tightly written and taut with suspense. The romance is steaming hot and also sweet. I can't wait to see what sorts of mischief Barakiel and Zan will get up to in the next book!

I was immediately caught up in its cosmic sweep. This is a sexy story featuring Libby Doyle's sharp eye for narrative and spot-on, often funny, dialogue. At heart it's a great romantic love story between a cast-off superhuman and a beautiful, but damaged FBI agent. That's just part of it. There's crime, urban grit, science fiction, unimaginable evil, false monks, boats, guitars, violins and lots of great music. Highly recommended.
