The story begins with a fifty-year flashback on a freighter. Its cargo consisted of several hundred genetically created super-humans know as chimeras. One of them breaks free from the storage chamber and kills the crew except for the pilot.

   Moving forward fifty years later, Joe Prevost and his team of hired security were finishing up with a mission to capture a known terrorist. The task was successful, but before they could return the "package" to their employer, they get diverted to the Vega system to investigate a downed freighter. After arriving on Vega, Joe and his team find themselves engaged in a fight for their lives against a large number of chimeras. During the fight, a group of Marines from a nearby battlecruiser are sent to assist or evacuate. The battle rages on and the Marine ship collides with Joe's ship stranding everyone on the planet. Their only choice of survival is to use the mystery ship, the Halifax, they investigated earlier. The entire party made it to the Halifax and left the planet. Joe's relief is short-lived when they discovered the battlecruiser orbiting the planet had been completely destroyed. 

   Out of fuel, and knowing an enemy ship is lurking in the darkness, the Halifax's crew finds itself stranded in a remote star system. Joe has to trust in his crew and the newly arrived Marines to come up with a plan to repair the ship and find the fuel needed to make it to safety. The only problem is the ones they thought were friends ended up becoming their enemy.
