The Skeleton and the Lantern
Sherri Kukla, author

Children/Young Adult; Mystery/Thriller; (Market)

The fear that flowed through 13-year-old Jeremiah when he saw a man's body dangling from the power station tower on the way to the desert with his dad should have been a premonition. But he missed the clue. In the days ahead instead of just riding dirt bikes in the desert, he and his sister, Millie, 11, would encounter a ghostly skeleton haunting his family and the desert property they hoped to buy. The skeleton would prove to be a minor scare compared to later staring down the barrel of a gun after discovering a treasure trove of gold bars. Someone was trying to stop their purchase of their desert land and interfere with Millie’s adoption. Despite many setbacks, including criminals chasing them, the family perseveres to fulfill the dream to buy land and help kids in need of a home. Jeremiah and Millie both came into this family from the foster care system. Ultimately the kids solve the mystery of the skeleton and after the purchase of the land, they discover stolen gold buried on the property. The Deputy Sheriff who arrives to tell them about their reward, has a young boy with him who needs a home because his mother is going to prison. Not knowing the family’s plan for their new property, he asks the parents to pray about a home for Caleb, who ends up joining their family.
Reviews
Chris Fabry, Award-Winning Author and Radio Host

"I love a story that moves fast and leaves you wanting more! The Skeleton and the Lantern had me from the start. It’s more than a MotoMystery—it’ll grab your heart."

Fantastic Off Road Mystery

As a retired middle school English teacher, this book is a must have for a classroom library. Each chapter ends with a cliffhanger encouraging the reader to continue the journey. Mystery and suspense, off road adventures and legend, make this a great read for even the reluctant reader. After reading this book, I went back and purchased copies for all of the kids in my family!

MotoMysteries: Brand New Off Road Mystery Series for Kids

The legend is told that if you find yourself out late at night in the Southern California desert, you may see an 8-foot skeleton with a lantern in his chest searching for a lost gold mine. Charley Arizona first told the story in the 1800’s and today the legend becomes real in a brand new series for kids ages 9 and up – MotoMysteries – from the publishers of S&S Off Road Magazine. In Book 1, The Skeleton and the Lantern, siblings Jeremiah and Millie discover the ghostly skeleton haunting their camp and it’s just the beginning of the adventure.

Multiple five-star reviews on Amazon reflect excitement for the book launched in mid-October.

“Really fun story, especially for my 10-year-old son who loves motorcycles and the desert. We have trouble finding books that hold his interest, but he loved this one.” – Sarah Turvey, Parent
