Adult; Mystery/Thriller; (Market)

Judge. Jury. Therapist. Twenty-five years ago, Larisa Bergman buried her past, and with it, the terrible secret she vowed to take to her grave. Now a successful real estate broker with a new identity, she has money in the bank, a charming apartment…and increasingly debilitating panic attacks. Then she finds Dr. Mila Thorton, who offers her the perfect solution—a new treatment with a startling success rate. Therapist Mila Thorton sees the worst of the worst in her practice—patients who’ve done terrible things and are unable to control their actions. Referring these reprehensible patients to psychiatrist Dr. Blackmore as test subjects for a questionable new treatment seems like a favor to society, not to mention earning her a little extra money. But everything comes at a price… When Leo’s longtime girlfriend dies unexpectedly, she leaves behind a note asking him to protect her daughter Mila…along with some startling allegations. Now it’s up to him to find out who Dr. Blackmore really is before it’s too late. Three people—their lives irrevocably linked by a web of secrets—are drawn together in one explosive and suspenseful thriller that will keep readers turning the pages until the final shocking conclusion.

K.C. Finn for Readers' Favorite

The Therapist is a suspenseful and dark work of fiction penned by author Kelly Holm. Centered around the idea of secrets locked away in a forgotten past, a trio of central characters takes us through the tangled web of buried psychological traumas, family ties, and future torments. At the center is Mila Thornton, a therapist who refers patients with uncontrollable latent traumas to the mysterious Dr. Blackmore, whose new method for curing them seems terrifyingly effective. One such patient is Larisa Bergman, who seems at first to have the ideal life. Then there’s the grieving Leo, who is avowed to protect Mila by his late girlfriend, though he has no idea why.Author Kelly Holm takes readers on a fascinating journey with many threads to pull in this fantastic and engaging work of psychological suspense. It can be a mean feat to keep that excitement and tension level going for a full-length work, but the deft entangling and pacing of three plot strands means that readers are always shifting from one intense mystery to another. The plot itself is very well crafted, coming together in some satisfying ways which you can guess, but then also making a few surprise connections that were very clever indeed. I enjoyed the characterization work of the narrative especially, which allows us to get very close to the central figures as the trauma in each of their minds is unpicked. Overall, The Therapist is a highly recommended read for fans of dark psychological suspense and personal drama tales.
