The Witch of Gray's Point (Lorestalker #3)
J.P. Barnett, author

It hides in the shadows, waits in the desert, ready to pounce on any who enter its domain.

To Miriam Brooks, a solo study trip to an abandoned desert ranch house sounds like the perfect respite from the world, a way to unwind and center herself after a string of unbelievable encounters with terrifying monsters.

Yet the desert isn’t devoid of life. Something lurks outside her window, changing its form to suit its mysterious needs. She’s familiar with the stories, but legend becomes reality when she stands face-to-face with a soulless copy of herself.

Another day, another monster… but before she can act, Miriam is unexpectedly flanked by the father she’s been trying to avoid, along with two cocky assistants who don’t understand the threat they face. She’s equipped to battle the shape-shifting terror hiding in the darkness, but being forced to finally confront her father might just kill her.

When it comes to characters, Barnett is always on par when it comes to developing them. The main heroine Miriam developed beautifully and realistically in The Kraken of Cape Madre. She develops even more in The Witch of Gray’s Point in even more beautiful and realistic ways. She is such a headstrong character and does not accept help from others. She has learned to accept help since her encounter with the Kraken, but she has yet to learn how to fully trust and rely on others to help her. The events that happen in this installment of the series force Miriam to do just that and while she tries to fight against it, she comes to the realization that everyone needs help from others from time to time. Readers also get to see her interact with her father, Skylar, who readers have not seen since book one, but it is great to see the development in not only their relationship, but also in Skylar himself.

With three books in a single year, Barnett is off to a fantastic start in his writing career. His Lorestalker Series has been one to watch out for as each book so far has given readers a new monster of folklore to chase after, new characters to follow as they beautifully develop, and a whole new story to become captivated with. For lovers of myths, folklore, and the macabre, Barnett is the author to follow and, with three books already published, there is plenty of material to read. His most recent release, The Witch of Gray’s Point, adds an excellent installment to the series as a whole.

The Witch of Gray's Point by J. P. Barnett is A Creature Feature Horror Suspense story, the third Lorestalker book. Miriam Brooks has managed to grab a few days away, a brief respite in an abandoned ranch house in the desert to catch up with her studying. Encounters with monsters have left her behind and worn out but she isn’t going to get the time she needs. The first person she meets at the house is her estranged father, together with his assistants, investigating sightings of Skinwalkers, shapeshifters that wander the desert. Miriam is more than equipped to fight them but she’s not so sure whether she can face her father. Will the hunt for the Skinwalkers finally bring them together or pull them apart forever? And do any of them truly understand the horrors they are about to face?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Witch of Gray’s Point (Lorestalker Book 3) by J.P. Barnett. I didn’t read the first two books but there was enough detail included to bring me up to speed on previous events. The characters were well developed, likable people, real human beings that you can easily relate to and the plot bounced along at a steady pace with plenty of action. You are drawn into the story straight away and thrown right into the action early on. This is a riveting story with a strong plot that will hold you spellbound from start to finish. Perfect for fans of the macabre and horror who want something different, a story that delves into ancient horrors.

The Witch of Gray's Point: A Creature Feature Horror Suspense (Lorestalker Book 3) is a horror novel written by J.P. Barnett. The fact that her college finals were looming ahead made Miriam’s decision to hide away at her secret study place an easy one. Her investigation into the Kraken had carried over into the semester, and she had fallen perilously far behind in her coursework. Her professors had been quite supportive in giving out extensions and offering more one-on-one time in their offices, but Miriam was aware that she had to get this right. Macy Donner, her best friend and owner of the car Miriam would be using to get to her study haven, was worried that she had no way to reach Miriam -- but things in the cryptozoological world had been very quiet lately. And the point of a hidden study refuge was that there would be no distractions, wasn’t it?

J.P. Barnett’s Lorestalker series is bound to bring a thrill to anyone who harbors a secret obsession with cryptozoology and finds themselves unable to resist searching the internet for the latest sighting of a chupacabra or photos of odd beached creatures on foreign or even domestic shores. The Witch of Gray's Point is likely to get them just as wired and eager to start following along as Miriam encounters not only her estranged father but creatures that seem impossible even to someone with her background in cryptozoology. Miriam Brooks has to be one of my favorite fictional characters. She’s a fascinating blend of scientist, geek and unassuming super-hero; she’s also a hoot and a half to follow in her investigations. And Miriam isn’t the only notable character in this monstrously good series. They’re all well-defined and credible. Barnett’s plot is engrossing and thought-provoking, and his story is fast-paced and suspenseful. The Witch of Gray's Point: A Creature Feature Horror Suspense (Lorestalker Book 3) is most highly recommended.

Book three in the Lorestalker series, The Witch of Gray's Point by J.P. Barnett finds cryptid hunter and university student Miriam Brooks en route to an isolated desert ranch house where she intends to unwind and center herself following a life or death struggle with a giant Kraken (Lorestalker series #2, The Kraken of Cape Madre). To her dismay, she discovers that her estranged father has already occupied the house with his new team of cryptid hunters on an expedition to prove or disprove the existence of a shapeshifter in the area. Miriam wants no part of the hunt or her father but decides to stay one night before heading back to university. During the night, she awakens to see a soulless copy of herself staring at her through the bedroom window. Against her better judgment, she decides to join the hunt that quickly turns into a bad idea.

Right off the bat, two things about J.P. Barnett's writing style impressed me. The first was his attention to verisimilitude in scene-setting; from location and character appearance to fight scenes, Barnett knows whence he writes. A sense of reality pervades every aspect of this horror story. My second great impression was the author's talent at creating an expectation, tension, and unseen twists in the storyline. In The Witch of Gray's Point, nothing is as it seems including lead character and heroine Miriam. I'll leave that statement there for the reader to discover for him/herself… no spoilers from me! J.P. Barnett has an excellent horror/suspense series running where each book stands on its own merit, storyline, and conclusion.
