Three New People: Make the Most of Your Daily Interactions and Stop Missing Amazing Opportunities
Brian Miller, author

Adult; Self-Help, Sex & Relationships, Psychology, Philosophy, Fashion; (Market)

Three New People is a manifesto on the beauty and power of human connection in a world where loneliness has reached epidemic levels. We’re rushed, frazzled, distracted, and frankly, scared to talk to strangers. But what if it didn’t have to be that way? What if we could easily connect with anyone we meet – on the airplane, at the coffee shop, waiting in line, in the elevator – and take the chance of making a new connection: one that might last for seconds, or for a lifetime? As a child with social anxiety, Brian Miller used magic in order to make friends. Now, as a globetrotting professional magician turned motivational speaker, he presents his secrets for connecting with the people you meet on a daily basis.
Reviews
Magician Miller’s cheery, instructive debut, based on a TEDx Talk he gave, explains how readers can build connections and strengthen relationships by employing the techniques of a magician. Pulling back the curtain on how he connects with an audience, Miller explains that his tricks only inspired “wonder” when he had fully taken on the audience’s perspective—and to establish a connection with his audience, he learned he first needed to chat and joke with people in the crowd. After years of unfulfilling relationships that “started off passionate and invigorating” but would become increasingly distant, it dawned on Miller that he wasn’t putting the same effort into his personal relationships as he was his audience, so he began to employ his magician tactics of “perspective-taking” and active listening in his personal life. To help readers do the same, he provides four steps: “utilize visual perspective” (be aware of body language), “all the feels” (be aware of others’ feelings), “bridge the gap” (ask genuine questions), and “E.A.R.S.” (eye contact, avoiding distraction, reflection, and summarization). By exploring magic as metaphor for connection—“a shared experience within which... people could feel heard, understood, and valued”—Miller brilliantly outlines a system for deepening relationships. In, Three New People, Brian Miller talks about communication, which is an important lesson that we all need for daily interaction with others. This book is insightful and entertaining. I was fully engaged and particularly liked his teachings on the seriousness of helping people to feel validated. There are exercises on how to remember people’s names and the significance of doing so. He encourages us to accept, and learn from one another’s differences, which is vital and has the capacity to be life changing.
