She woke up in 1947...in someone else's body.
When a sarcastic mother of two is offered the chance to go back in time through an antique locket’s mirror, she is told she must look past herself. But when she does, she escapes the confines of her (imagined) domestic prison and comes face to face with the reality of life in the 1940’s – glamour, communism, smallpox and all. Now she must find a way to return to life before falling through the mirror. Humor, history and sci fi coalesce in this breakout novel, TIME IN MY POCKET.

Dryly humorous time-traveling mom adventure

March 11, 2018

Format: Paperback|Verified Purchase

I'm a big fan of time-travel stories in general and what distinguishes Time in My Pocket from others that I have read is its sense of humor. There were several moments reading this that I laughed out loud, and I guess that is to be expected when you have a main character that is a mom in a bit of a rut, who is then transported via mirror into the body of a drug-abusing old Hollywood vixen (which I suppose makes this story about body-travelling as well). The story plays out as several mysteries: mainly, how does the traveling work and who is this Barbara Miller? And I was genuinely interested in unraveling these questions with our main character, Liza as Barbara. Other time-traveling tales written in the modern era tend to use the device of time travel as a way of exploring complex socio-economic issues, and there is some of that in Time in my Pocket, but this is mostly centered on its characters, which makes it an enjoyably lighter read. Nearly all the characters are women, which is also an interesting change of pace, and there is no heavy scientific explanation of how the time travel works, which is my preferred way of explaining it all. This was thoroughly enjoyable throughout, written with a unique sense of style that blends pop culture references with a detached, yet still humanistic wit. I look forward to reading more from author Gina Dewink.
