Get ready to drop, cover and hold on with Tummy Rumble Quake. In the follow on to Elephant Wind, author Heather Beal presents another excellent learning opportunity for all ages. The messages that accompany the wonderful illustrations are not only important, but also easy to understand. Children learn how to handle issues surrounding an earthquake in a non-frightening and empowering way. The positive messages in Tummy Rumble Quake allow children to participate in their own safety and convey the need for preparation. This book will be probably become a most ‘often requested’ book for grandparents, parents, and children.

Tummy Rumble Quake by Heather L. Beal is an educational and informative story that tells children how to handle issues in a calm and composed manner when there is an earthquake. In the story, Ms Mandy goes to the bookcase and shakes it. She tells Lily that she is making sure the bookcase is securely attached to the wall before The Great ShakeOut. Niko wants to know what a Great ShakeOut is. Dylan says everyone practices for earthquakes and his brother’s class had done it last year. Ms Mandy explains to Niko and Lily what an earthquake is, and how and why it happens. She also tells them the three things they should do when there is an earthquake. So children, are you ready to learn about earthquakes?

I like the way in which the author explains earthquakes and what needs to be done to stay safe during an earthquake in a simple manner that can be understood by young readers. Children will know what has to be done to remain safe during an earthquake after reading this book. The illustrations are lively and they make the concept very clear to young readers. The questions and activities at the end of the story make it an excellent book for interactive sessions in classrooms and school libraries. Parents and grandparents can also read it out to their kids and grandkids at home and help them understand about earthquakes and what to do during one. The author makes science and learning interesting through this story, and what a good way to help children learn about earthquakes!

The Midwest Book Review

Second title in a successful juvenile safety series, "Tummy Rumble Quake" is a child's safety procedures manual for earthquakes drills. Written for children ages 4-8 by a military veteran with over 20 years of crisis management and operational planning experience, "Tummy Rumble Quake" sets up a children's classroom for adorable animal children students as a laboratory for teaching accepted standard safety procedures to practice during earthquakes. Along with a class full of eager students, Lily and Niko Rabbit learn to "drop, cover, and hold on," when caught indoors during an earthquake. The also learn similar safety steps to take if caught outside during an earthquake, or even in a car. Procedures are taught in simple statements such as "drop, cover, and hold on," and also in song. "If the room starts to rock, stop what you're doing and drop. Get under cover on the floor; hold on till it's safe once more." Bright colored, cheery illustrations show animal students practicing Great ShakeOut moves and safety procedures with their teacher, Ms Mandy. A calm, non-frightening tone and approach is emphasized throughout the story, which is helpful for kids in dealing with the scary issue of earthquake drills and procedures. At the end of "Tummy Rumble Quake" there are learning questions and activities from Lily and Niko Rabbit, plus safety resources at, www.train4safety.com/ready-tots/ to print out a certificate of training completion and more reference information about earthquake safety. Like the first title in this series, "Elephant Wind," "Tummy Rumble Quake" addresses its audience of readers ages 4-8 directly, with gentleness, warmth and caring.
