Unexpected Legacy
Matt Dalton’s world is spinning off its axis. Without warning, he’s thrown into the world of parenting a teenager. Matt meets his son for the first time when the sixteen-year-old is dealing with the consequences of a tragic car accident. Not only has Brady lost his best friend, he faces disability and scars both physical and emotional. Determined to do whatever it takes to give his son a second chance, Matt looks to his alma mater to step up and help Brady regain his athletic abilities and sense of self. But sparks fly when he meets the high school principal, the captivating Kate Austen. Kate is ready to take Brady under her wing, but to her that means helping him refocus and find a new passion – using his brains rather than his brawn. Kate fully expects the younger Dalton to come with issues and challenges . . . his father may prove to be the biggest one of all. Though the chemistry is hard to ignore, Kate fights to keep her personal feelings and professional life separate. At the same time, Matt struggles to gain his son’s trust, and Brady must face the road to recovery and find a way to accept the changes in his life. Unexpected Legacy is a compelling story of bravery, compromise and resilience.

This was such a sweet story. I have not read a romance story like this in a long time....meaning it was reminiscent of the stories I use to read in my younger days. The kind of story that started me on this lovely journey to discover that there are HEA's out there. Matt & Kate had an instant attraction. She had professional boundaries she felt were necessary, which kept her from embracing the attraction she felt toward him. Silly girl!! Matt is adorable and sensitive but he wants Kate. It is not easy to adhere to the boundaries especially when Matt's son is a student at Kate's school and experiences new challenges, the least of which is meeting his dad for the first time at 17 years of age. I think the best part of this story, beside the brewing romance between Matt & Kate, is watching the beautiful bond develop between Matt and his son, Brady. Matt is in unchartered territory as a new dad of a 17 year old. Especially when he has to balance that out with guiding his son through the physical and psychological healing from his accident and disability. In the end, this story represents what a family can conquer together when faced with challenging life circumstances. And, for Kate...it is possible to find a balance between career and love.

Ms. Deluca did a fantastic job in pulling me into the emotions of the characters. I felt the emotional struggles of Matt learning to be a dad. I felt the pain and fear of Brady as he struggled with the emotional and physical scars of his accident. I swear my heart was pounding on his first day of school. For Kate, I instantly connected with her passion and commitment to her job. and, I teared up while reading the scene at the cemetery. I fell in love with these characters.

I should note that if you are looking for a steamy romance, this book will probably not fulfill you but if you welcome a change of pace and are in the mood for sentimentality, this read will be worth your time.
