Girl fulfills dream of publishing first book by age 10
Young author of 400 homemade books set to release children’s Christmas story
CINCINNATI, OH, [September 28, 2014] – Most young girls have big, bold dreams about what they want to be when they grow up. Piper Hawkins dreamed of writing and publishing a book, a dream that’s being fulfilled not when she “grows up,” but before her 10th birthday.
Hawkins, a writer and illustrator of more than 400 “homemade” books, has written a children’s Christmas story that is set to be released next month.
What began as something fun to do at home turned into a passion last year after attending Books by the Banks, a local book festival, with her mother. Hawkins was so inspired following the day-long event she declared, “By the time I’m 10, I want to publish a book and have a booth at this festival.”
Hawkins got to work writing a story about goodness in the world. In “Visions of Light: A Christmas Story,” young Alice accidentally bumps into her neighbor, Mr. Fredricks, who always reminded her of Santa Claus. The collision in the hallway of their apartment building causes Mr. Fredericks’ glasses to fall to the ground. This is where the magic begins! Out of curiosity, Alice puts on his glasses and is enchanted to see what Mr. Frederick sees – the love and light in others.
“I encouraged Piper to write an uplifting story. I couldn’t be more proud of the end result, a story about the impact of showing kindness to others,” said Kristen Hausfeld Hawkins, the young author’s mother.
Beautifully illustrated by Kathleen "Fred" Streitenberger, professionally edited and published by For Good Media, “Visions of Light: A Christmas Story” will be released in early October.
