“Walking through Sunflowers: through Deepest France on the Road to Compostela” is the narrative of my pilgrimage with my companion across France along one of the traditional paths toward the shrine of Santiago in northwestern Spain. The trail, known as the Chemin du Puy, leads from mountainous central France to high limestone plateaus and fertile river valleys; to jewels of Romanesque architecture at the many traditional shrines along the way; through the vineyards and rich farmland of Aquitaine; and over the Pyrenees to Spain. In the book I integrate the motley parade of modern pilgrims, the thousand-year history of the path, its natural, artistic, and spiritual heritage, our own inward evolution, and the seductive environment of southern France that combine to leave such an indelible impression on body and soul.
