The protagonist of a previous book, Mal Practice, returns to solve yet another murder. Dr. Joe Nelson is supposed to be having a fun time in the city of Las Vegas but he cannot ignore the plight of runaway children, and soon he and his compatriots are caught up in a gruesome murder. They have been warned not to get involved, but Joe is ignoring that advice once again.
