In the Grip of Time (Actus Tempus Saga #1)
Adam Jacob Burgess. Nunmill, $13.99 paper (378p) ISBN 978-1-83808-863-7
On the continent of Esh’areth, in the peaceful Blue Forest, a young, curious gnome named Sawwse Bohge lives in an isolationist gnome compound whose society centers pranks over the pursuit of knowledge. More passionate about music and learning than are her fellow gnomes, Sawwse makes a split-second decision that sends her on a quest to both see the world and save her homeland. Intertwining plotlines increase the narrative’s action and energy—one involving the safety of three magical idols, one involving the protection of a king and his heir, and another centering an “Ancient Device” that is purported to be able to control time and will determine the fate of the land. As Sawwse encounters a range of companions and foes, including bloodthirsty bandits and powerful mages, the stakes of her quest grow ever higher. This winding high fantasy series starter may feel overly ambitious, with an unnecessarily large cast. But prophetic squirrels, kindly vegetarian ogres, and a charming, gender-nonconforming changeling are among the memorable characters, and debut author Burgess crafts a satisfying ending that successfully sets up the next installment. Ages 12–up. (Self-published)
